3 Ways to Choose a Subject

Choosing an academic subject to study can be a difficult or daunting task, not only for a Reach Cambridge program, but also for life in general. Whether it’s a subject you want to continue in school, a subject you want to explore at University, or one that you want to pursue as a career, there are a lot of things to consider before making a decision.
We at Reach have tried to come up with a (hopefully!) helpful list of things to think about based on our own experience, although there are many helpful resources out there that can offer well-researched facts and advice. But always remember that it’s your opinion that is most important when making decisions about your future.

Reach's Subject Course Spotlight!

From Monday 25th November – Monday 9th December, we’ll be highlighting a different academic course each day on our social media. Keep up with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to explore each one along with us, and read to the end for news about our special discount (it’s worth it!).

1. Looking Ahead

It’s always helpful when making a big decision to sit down and consider the consequences of the choice, however small. Just think: how will my life change by making this decision? How will it impact my future?
Maybe you recognise you love to travel, so a foreign language would be helpful (maybe brushing up on your English conversation with our ESL class). Perhaps it’s something bigger, like picking a subject that will result in a certain career – for example, if you want to be an engineer, you’re probably going to have to take Maths (or full-on Engineering, of course, which we offer in our Summer Programs)! Conversely, maybe you feel your University/ higher education route is set, and so this coming summer might be one of your last opportunities for a while to study something just because you’re curious about it.
Whatever your motivation, it’s always good to think things through. It may even be beneficial to talk them through with someone else, which brings us on to the next point:

2. Insider advice

Sometimes the best way to know the potential consequences of a decision is to speak to people who have already made that decision!
If you’re picking a subject at school, you could speak to someone in the year above who’s studying that course now. If you’re thinking about a summer school to join, ask any friends/family who’ve been on similar camps what they recommend. If you’re thinking about studying a subject at University, you can read course descriptions on their website/prospectus, and even search for sites like the Student Room or the Complete University Guide, where you can get feedback from actual students about their experience.

3. Follow Your Passion

Wherever possible, ensuring you pick something to study that you enjoy and that you are passionate about is, in our opinion, of utmost importance. Whether it’s a subject for school, a course on a study program or a University degree, you’re going to be dedicating time and effort into whichever option you choose. Therefore, make sure you feel highly motivated and very interested in whatever you do… and hopefully you’ll have lots of fun on your learning journey!
