Online Courses FAQs

What experience does Reach Cambridge have in providing educational courses?

Since 2005, Reach Cambridge has given thousands of young people from all over the world the opportunity to prepare for the future in a university environment. Our summer programs are based in the historic city of Cambridge, offering an exciting and varied program including academic subject courses, group activities, lectures and excursions. We are delighted to be able to apply this experience to create dynamic, flexible academic tuition working with our highly regarded expert tutors.

We are very proud of the fact that most of our families join our programs or online courses based on positive feedback and recommendations from siblings, friends or their school.

Why should I choose an online course?

For many students, a highlight of our residential programs is the academic courses that take place each day. Based on feedback from our families, we have introduced online courses to enable us to offer the same high-level of academic learning to people who may be unable to join a program in Cambridge. This will be the same quality of teaching, but with a twist - a huge benefit of these online courses is that they will be one-to-one. This means the curriculum will be based solely on each individual’s requirements to expand their knowledge base and challenge and prepare them for their future academic studies.

What are the learning objectives?

Whether you’re looking to expand your existing passion or to discover something new, our online courses are perfect for every interest and every level!
Through each one-to-one course, students will:

  • Improve subject knowledge
  • Increase confidence
  • Grow in independence
  • Acquire key skills
  • Overcome insecurities
  • Challenge expectations of learning and of yourself
  • Explore new ideas and theories
  • Take control of their education
  • Learn about university life
  • Have fun!

Who will be teaching these online courses?

Our inspiring team of teachers works closely with our Curriculum Adviser to provide the highest quality subject courses. Many of our teachers are working professionals in their field or studying at high-level academic institutions such as Cambridge, Oxford or London universities. They are usually Fellows, Professors, researchers or postgraduates and specialists in their field. Here at Reach, our teachers have significant autonomy in creating their lessons so that they can utilise their expertise fully.

Are there any age requirements?

We are delighted to be able to offer our one-to-one online tutoring and courses to students all over the world aged 13-24. Whether you are looking for expert tutoring to complement your school curriculum, to test-drive a course before University or to expand your knowledge for a future career, we are here to help!

How do you manage safety online & safeguarding?

Our foremost concern at Reach Cambridge is to ensure the safety of all students. We have a clear set of regulations for students and staff and our tutors are carefully selected to ensure our students are kept safe. All Reach Cambridge tutors are subject to a rigorous DBS (Disclosures and Barring Service) check as per the legal requirements for working with young people in the UK. All Reach Cambridge tutors are experienced at working with young people. All lessons are recorded and retained for 28 days and regular lesson observations are made by our central team. In addition, Reach Cambridge Summer Schools is regularly inspected by the British Accreditation Council, which includes an inspection of our safeguarding practices.

Our online courses safeguarding policy can be found in our Terms & Conditions.

Is it possible to offer online courses to groups?

We are happy to offer online courses and tutoring for pairs or groups of friends, please email us at online@reachcambridge.com for more information.

We are also delighted to offer bespoke online courses for groups and schools. Please visit our groups page for more information.

What software do I need?

All our lessons will take place over Zoom. We will send over more information on how this works and the processes in place to ensure lessons are efficient, rewarding and safe.

What materials will I need?

To get started, all you need is an internet connection, paper and something to write with, and the ability to speak with your tutor over Zoom. To use Zoom you will need an external microphone and webcam if these are not already built into your computer. Your tutor will inform you about anything else that might help to enrich your classes.

When will the lessons take place and how long will they be?

Each tutor will work with students to come up with a schedule of lessons which suits both the student’s availability and the nature of their lessons and learning objectives together.

Lessons can also take place at weekends and weekday evenings and we are able to adapt the schedule to suit your time-zone.

How many hours of study can I sign up for?

Our tuition bundles are available in 10, 20, or 40 hours of subject study with the option to supplement with 5 hours of leadership and/or study skills. Additional hours of study can be booked at a preferential rate by speaking to a member of the advisory team.

Can I choose more than one course?

Absolutely! You can design your own course or tutoring schedule with us - find out more via this link.

In order to get the most out of your learning, we do recommend that you dedicate a minimum of 10 hours to a certain academic subject. If you would like to discuss studying more than one academic course subject in our 20 or 40 hour bundles, please speak to our expert advisers in your first personalised session or contact us at online@reachcambridge.com

What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

If you need to cancel one of your lessons, you will need to notify your Reach adviser at least 24 hours in advance of when the lesson was set to begin. Your adviser will then communicate with your tutor and help you to reschedule the lesson. Any failure to attend an online lesson without 24 hours notice will result in being charged for that lesson.

What can I do if my internet connection falters during my lesson?

Some tips for getting the most out of your internet broadband include:

  • using an ethernet cable to connect your device to the internet (rather than using wifi);
  • positioning your router as far from other devices which might cause interference as possible;
  • trying to limit the number of other people streaming or video calling on the same internet connection at the same time.

Is it possible to join you in Cambridge for a program too?

Absolutely! Students aged 13-18 can benefit from our one-to-one personalised online lessons and also join us in Cambridge for one of our international summer programs at a preferential rate. For more information on our residential programs, please visit www.reachcambridge.com.
